By the 1930s, Calder had established himself as one of the greatest modern sculptors with his \u2018Mobiles\u2019, suspended sculptures that are constantly in motion. Deeply attached to France throughout his life, he settled in 1953 in Sach\u00e9, a village in Touraine, where he bought a house named \u2018Fran\u00e7ois 1er\u2019. In 1963, he built a large studio, which he designed on the Carroi site, overlooking the Indre valley.
