This is the most significant monographic exhibition dedicated to this young French artist, who very early on chose painting in its most figurative form. Since her beginnings in 2012, she has developed, on large-format canvases, a vibrant and colorful body of work, shimmering with countless details. Giving free rein to the multitude of stories that populate her imagination, she invents from scratch an Edenic, lush, and floral world that seems to invite viewers to embrace the joys of existence.

At the cccod Marie-Anita Gaube is exhibiting a significant portion of the pictorial work which she has pursued for just under ten years. It is the biggest monographic exhibition dedicated to this young French artist who chose painting in its most figurative dimension at an early stage. From the very outset in 2012, she has cultivated a bright and colourful body of work, teeming with thousands of details on large format canvases. Giving free reign to the multitude of stories that take over her imagination, Marie-Anita Gaube conjures up an Edenic world from thin air.

Lush and solar, Marie-Anita Gaube’s universe seems to be a pure invitation to the joys of existence. Despite the blue skies, her paintings are however deeply disturbed. The turbulent compositions and rhythm of the colours afford the eye no rest. Every inch of the painting overflows with unexpected events. The characters, objects, colourful patterns and landscape features combine in a body of interrelated narratives.

All sorts of universes cohabit on the surface of the canvas. Day and night occur simultaneously, scales are distorted, boundaries between indoor and outdoor space have been eliminated. Different perspectives are superimposed and juxtaposed interlinking in complex constructions.

Full of energy, something darker also seems to permeate Marie-Anita Gaube’s work. Omnipresent still lifes, masks and statuettes resonate with more archaic existential concerns. Something strange emanates from these characters captured in postures of which the meaning is not always grasped, from these bodies somewhat lost in their surroundings that at times absorbs them to the point of virtually obscuring them.
In the black gallery of the CCC OD, ‘Odysseys’ leads us on an exploration of Marie-Anita Gaube’s fantasy worlds. The exhibition presents a substantial series of thirty or so paintings and drawings produced from 2014 until now. The most recent canvases, specially produced for the occasion, reflect the artist’s new concerns. In a more frontal and condensed composition, the body no longer materialises like just one element scattered among others, it is a subject in its own right that is portrayed in an almost choreographic approach.

Book available in CCC OD.

Marie-Anita Gaube presents at the cccod a large body of the pictorial work she has been developing for just under ten years.
