Working across different media which he weaves into the practice of drawing, Mathieu Dufois has spent the past decade exploring the memory of images, whether taken from films, diverse archives or his own photographic notes. His pieces probe the resistance of these «ghostly images» which extend their reach through time and space to resurface in our experience of the present. Breaking free from the surface of the paper, Mathieu Dufois’ drawings delve into a third dimension through volume or movement. In this way, he produces films at the intersection of experimental cinema and animation.
In 2018, the CCC OD invited Mathieu Dufois on an artist-in-residence programme at the Fayoum Art Center in Egypt. Back at the art centre today, he is unveiling the results of this immersion in the Faiyum Oasis which, for an artist who, mindful of the traces of the past, has always taken an almost archaeological approach to drawing, turned out to be hugely inspirational.
Mathieu Dufois thus immersed himself in the centuries-old strata of Egyptian culture, whilst grappling with the white light of the desert. This was an artistic shock for an artist renowned for his black stone drawings, whose visual creations have been shaped by a strong affinity with darkness.
Embracing these new inspirations, the exhibition charts a journey through the myriad forms and textures of drawing. It leads us from light into shadow, returning to this darkness where, in Mathieu Dufois’ eyes, everything plays out and everything begins.

The artist was born in 1984 in Chartres. He now lives and works in Tours.
Drawing is at the heart of Mathieu Dufois’ work, who equally produces large series of drawings, paper models, and films which genre oscillates between animation and experimental film. The paper models are used as decor for the latter.
In Mathieu Dufois’ work, the drawing is no longer merely bi-dimensional; it explores a third dimension through volume and movement. By introducing the pencil’s black powder into the multimedia, the artist aims at going past the limits of graphic language, creating singular shapes and materials.
Deeply inspired by cinema, his work triggers our memory: drawing almost becomes an archeological tool that allows all emotions and memories from the past to resurface.
Mathieu Dufois implements here the three forms of drawing into his work. He also presents for the first time the paper models that were used for the making of his short film “Par les Ondes”.
