game over architecture

The Project Room of the CCC presents a research work led by Philippe Chiambaretta with the Agency of artists of the CCC since 2002 on the theme of the architecture of places of art. Taking the CCC building itself as the subject of application of his research, Philippe Chiambaretta developed the project of an interactive second skin enveloping the building. It proceeds by analogy with the internal/external relationship observed in the functioning of the cell membrane in molecular biology.

The facade thus becomes an organic «complex» containing between the two skins multimedia devices that broadcast the work of the Art Centre in the street and establishes an interaction with passers-by.
The installation designed for the Project Room emphasizes the dimension of playful interactivity between the viewer and the projection. Through a visual and sound mixing device, the viewer is invited to compose his own architecture. He can participate for the first time in the dynamic creation of the facade.

«Game Over Architecture» works on the principle of video games. Each visitor has the opportunity to explore the codes of architecture on a human scale (plans, cuts in elevation wire drawings), to combine them, deform them with eight playmats. This network of carpets reminiscent of those of large Japanese high-tech gaming spaces also produces digitized sounds, which generates a real videogame soundtrack. The result of this interactive exploration of architecture is evaluated by scoring software that enhances the game with fortune cookies, considerations that bring us back to the very title of the Project Room.

philippe chiambaretta

Born in 1963 in Carcassonne, Philippe Chiambaretta is architect. He lives and works in Paris.

He founded in 2001 the PCA agency (Philippe Chiambaretta Architecte). PCA is a pluridisciplinary team of engineers, architects and designers that aims at broadening the scope of the image of the architect as a simple professional designer. The PCA agency is deeply interested in the process of creation and its exploratory, urban and architectural dimensions.

In the light of a technical, scientific, and economic analysis, Philippe Chiambaretta explores the different contemporary artistic practices, and questions the traditional approaches and models of the art of building in a global economic and cultural context.
