For his exhibition at the Centre de Création Contemporaine Olivier Debré (CCC OD) in Tours, Christodoulos Panayiotou has designed a theatrical itinerary taking visitors on a spatiotemporal journey echoing the layout of the exhibition galleries and the architecture of the building.

Through a series of works that constitute a fragmented exploration of a variety of hidden mechanisms, questions of absence and loss are repeatedly summoned up, whether by processes connected with memory, erasure or anachronisms. Opening up a breach through a range of temporalities, the exhibition covers the art centre’s two upper floors, like two sequential strata of a single life.

There is particular emphasis on silence, creating space for the works’ density, enabling them to resonate. Each silence is a hyphen, connecting and separating at the same time. Christodoulos Panayiotou puts together his exhibitions as if he were editing the sequences of a movie – homing in on the narrative rhythm that slides between the invisible and visible image.

It is both in his movie-like aspects and the way in which he collects and compiles images that
the arrangements created by the artist – like a Mnemosyne atlas – call on the appearance of memory, the evanescence of recollections and the inability to capture the fleeting.

Christodoulos Panayiotou was born in 1978 in Limassol, Cyprus.

His personal exhibitions include the Musée d’Orsay in Paris; the Camden Arts Center in London; the Casa Luis Barragán, Mexico; the Moderna Museet, Stockholm; the Kunsthalle Zürich; the CCA Kitakyushu, Fukuoka; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Saint-Louis; Casino Luxembourg; Centre d’Art Contemporain de Brétigny; Museum of Contemporary Art, Leipzig and Cubitt, London.

Christodoulos Panayiotou represented Cyprus at the Venice Biennale in 2015. The artist has participated in major international events including Documenta 13 in Cassel, the 14th Biennale de Lyon, the 8th Biennale de Berlin, the 7th Biennale de Liverpool, Performa 15, the 6th Biennale de Taipei and the 8th Biennale de Melle.
His work has also been shown in a number of group exhibitions, notably at the Centre Pompidou, Paris; the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris; the Museion, Bolzano; the Migros Museum, Zürich; the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco; Joan Miro Foundation, Barcelona; Witte de With, Rotterdam; Bonniers Konsthall, Stockholm; Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia; Ashkal Alwan Center for Contemporary Arts, Beirut; Artist Space, New York; and MoCA Miami.
