tours voices

“Tours Voices 2013” is a sound installation created especially for Tours by Norwegian artist A K Dolven. She recorded it with the participation of women from Tours to coincide with her solo exhibition at the ccc in 2013. A gift from the artist to the ccc od, the work found its final form on the building’s forecourt.
A K Dolven is one of Norway’s most internationally acclaimed artists. Born in Oslo in 1953, she divides her time between London and Lofoten in Norway.
Her work uses a variety of media, including painting, video, photography, sound and installation. Her highly refined works explore the mechanisms of perception, memory and emotion. Human energy is the driving force behind his creations, which seek to capture the fragility of a moment.
“Tours Voices 2013″ is part of the artist’s ongoing research into the voice, humanity’s oldest instrument and an artistic material in its own right. As well as the language and meaning it enables us to express, for A K Dolven the voice is above all the physical medium for the personality, emotions and personal history of individuals.
Tours Voices 2013” uses voice alone to recreate the moment of an encounter: that of the Norwegian artist and 22 women living in Tours, all brought together on 24 February 2013 for a recording.1 This unique moment is embodied in the expression of the word “YES”, shouted in unison. All the voices become one, resonating with their multiple textures and nuances, but also with the emotions and presence in the world of each of these women.
The artist likes to compare the vibrations of the voice to those of a bell, which also emits a direct, analogue sound. Like the sound of the bell, which resonates identically through the centuries, the digital recording and the perennial dimension of the installation make it possible to inscribe all these voices in a historical time, in a duration that goes beyond the individual history of its protagonists.

The recording was made in 2013, exactly 100 years after Norwegian women gained the right to vote in 1913. In France, the right to vote was not granted until 1945. For the artist, the “YES” of “Tours Voices 2013” contains the memory of this crucial landmark in the history of women and the advancement of their rights.

Born in Oslo in 1953, A K Dolven divides her time between London and her home in the Lofoten Islands in Norway. The artist works across various media, including painting, video, photography, sound, and installation. Whatever the medium, A K Dolven’s works share the same formal simplicity, imbued with a heightened sensitivity to light—like that of the snow-covered Arctic expanses that form the backdrop for many of her pieces.
Through a wide diversity of subjects, A K Dolven’s practice is always underpinned by a reflection on the human condition, both intuitive and cerebral. Her works resemble true sensory experiences that deepen our understanding of the contemporary world by exploring the subtle and unconscious mechanisms of perception, memory, and emotion. Human energy drives A K Dolven’s creative process, and her works capture the fragility of a moment. As she herself expresses it: “My work revolves around this question: how to find balance in life. A balance that is at once personal, political, and social.”
