mathieu dufois

Drawing is at the heart of Mathieu Dufois’ work. It is from this main medium that he takes multiple paths, producing large series of drawings as well as paper models and films somewhere between animation and the experimental. The models are also the sets for his films.

In Mathieu Dufois’s work, drawing moves away from its usual two-dimensional condition to explore a third dimension through volume or movement. By introducing the black powder of the pencil into the scope of multimedia writing, the artist attempts to go beyond the limits of graphic language and acquire new forms and singular materials.

At the CCC, he brings together the three forms of drawing at work in his work. Mathieu Dufois is presenting several large-scale drawings and models used in the film, taken off screen for the first time, in conjunction with the new film “Par les Ondes”.

Mathieu Dufois examines bygone eras by reappropriating film sequences and archive images. In this way, he explores the memory of places, of an existence or of past events.

The decoding takes place when the photographic image is retranscribed using the drawing tool. The act of drawing is almost like an archaeological gesture, bringing to the surface all the emotions and memories of the past.

The main questions that underpin his work are whether the aura and vibrancy of those who lived are now lost forever, or whether they still remain somewhere.

If the surfaces around us can pick up material traces, can they also capture and record sensory waves? Could bringing all this data together enable us to reconstruct a being?

The film “Par les Ondes” is one of the three opuses making up the project “La Trilogie des Vestiges”, which stages the expanse of a city by focusing on the question of memory. The memory of a place, an existence or past events revealed by the city and its archaeology. A city as if endowed with a human mind that projects its own memories and uses them to combat the irreversibility of time.

mathieu dufois

The artist was born in 1984 in Chartres. He now lives and works in Tours.

Drawing is at the heart of Mathieu Dufois’ work, who equally produces large series of drawings, paper models, and films which genre oscillates between animation and experimental film. The paper models are used as decor for the latter.
In Mathieu Dufois’ work, the drawing is no longer merely bi-dimensional; it explores a third dimension through volume and movement. By introducing the pencil’s black powder into the multimedia, the artist aims at going past the limits of graphic language, creating singular shapes and materials.
Deeply inspired by cinema, his work triggers our memory: drawing almost becomes an archeological tool that allows all emotions and memories from the past to resurface.
Mathieu Dufois implements here the three forms of drawing into his work. He also presents for the first time the paper models that were used for the making of his short film “Par les Ondes”.

Mathieu Dufois is represented by the Galerie Particulière.
