Born in 1974 in Copenhagen lives and works in Copenhagen and Berlin. He studied at the Royal Academy of arts of Copenhagen and the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Frankfurt.

Time, as the fourth dimension of space, can be understood as much in terms of relativity as of illusion. Do the real and the present—the here and now—coincide? Can they truly be overlaid, or are they perceived differently by each observer?

Through installations and sculptural forms that are often simple and geometric, Jeppe Hein follows in the footsteps of the minimalist tradition of the 1960s, whilst at the same time challenging it through playfulness and humour, and by introducing the viewer’s gaze as a fundamental element. Like Moving neon cube, his works often reveal their own mechanics through a principle of construction and deconstruction that also highlights their inherent modularity – and, more broadly, that of the space itself – thereby establishing a relationship between sculptural form and architecture.

The relationship Jeppe Hein establishes between his work and kinetic art suggests that movement and time are regarded as inherent and fundamental materials within his sculptural practice.

During his residency at the Atelier Calder in 2009–2010, the Danish artist notably presented Circus Hein, a project centered on the themes of art and circus. Hein invited a wide range of participants—visual artists, circus performers, and performers more broadly—to create a collective piece, produced in partnership with the Frac Centre–Val de Loire.
